Undergraduate Program

This is translation of the extract version of an original application handbook 2007. (The original application handbook is only in Japanese.) When you will apply Nagoya University admission examination for fiscal 2008, please order an original application handbook 2008.
Eligibility for Application and Requirements
1. Eligibility for Application
  • A person who does not have Japanese citizenship (except for those who have permanent residence status in Japan).
  • The person shall:
  • Have completed the 12-year school education curriculum in a foreign country or be expected to complete the curriculum before March 31, 2007, or has completed the equivalent of 12 year school education as designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology;
  • Have the international BACCALAUREAT qualification awarded by the International BACCALAUREAT Office, a foundation based on Swiss Civil Law, and be at least 18 years of age on Mar. 31, 2007;
  • Have the ABITUR, recognized as a qualification for enrolling in universities in the provinces of the Federal Republic of Germany, and be at least 18 years of age on Mar. 31, 2007; and/or
  • Have the BACCALAUREAT, recognized as a qualification for enrolling in universities in the Republic of France, and be at least 18 years of age on Mar. 31, 2007.
2. Requirements
  • You shall take the "Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)" held by Japan Student Services Organization (EJU scores remain valid for two years). Select the Japanese language version.
  • For the "EJU" examination subjects, those who apply for the Schools of Letters, Education, Law, and Economics, and the School-of-Informatics-and-Sciences Department of Social-systems Informatics, shall select Japanese, Japan and the World, and Mathematics Course 1. Those who apply for the School-of-Informatics-and-Sciences Department of Nature Informatics, and the Schools of Science, Medicine and Agricultural Sciences shall select Japanese, Science (2 subjects among physics, chemistry, and biology), and Mathematics Course 2. Those who apply for the School of Engineering shall select Japanese, Science(physics and chemistry), and Mathematics Course2. The obtained scores of Japanese shall be not less than 220, and those of Japan and the World and Mathematics Course 1, or Science and Mathematics Course 2 shall be not less than 265.
  • Applicants are required to have sat for TOEFL or TOEIC in the two-year period prior to application and received a minimum score as follows: TOEFL: 430 (PBT), 117 (CBT), or 39 (iBT); TOEIC: 385.
    In consideration of the arrival time of the score-sheet, applicants taking the TOEFL iBT are requested to sit for the examination no later than December 10.
    With regard to TOEFL, Nagoya University's institutional code is ‘0312’.
  • You shall have acquired a "College Student" visa or be expected to acquire the visa at the time of entrance into Nagoya University.

 Number of Students Admitted
The number of students to be admitted to each school or department are as follows, however the Schools of Informatics and Sciences, Science, Medicine, Engineering, and Agricultural Sciences recruit students independently for their departments and majors.

 Selection Method
The enrollees will be selected comprehensively on the basis of the EJU and TOEFL/TOEIC results, the results of the University's screening test, and the application documents in the file.
 Nagoya University's Screening Test
Each applicant shall take the screening test held by his/her school of choice.

 Application Procedure
Submission of Application Documents
For application, send your "Documents and Other Materials Required for Application" as a completed set (see below in section 3). Use an envelope prescribed by the University. Send the materials by registered mail to the particular department or school to which your are applying.
(Only one person's application documents shall be included in one envelope. DO NOT put two different persons' applications in the same envelope.)

Application Deadline
The application package will be accepted starting Friday, January 5, 2007 and must arrive no later than 4 o'clock p.m. of Thursday, January 11, 2007.
Documents and Other Materials Required for Application
1. Entrance Examination Application Card
Fill out the card available from Nagoya University and affix your photograph (4cm × 3cm, full face, taken without hat, within 3 months) to it. Write your name and the school that you are applying to on the reverse side of the photograph.
2. Photo Card and Examination Admission Card
Fill out the card available from the University and affix same photograph as on the entrance examination application card on the photo card.
3. Diploma(or prospective graduation diploma) of your school, equivalent to a Japanese senior high school, and academic transcript
The documents shall be prepared in Japanese or English (attach a translation in case of any other language.) Any applicant who has some period of attendance left before graduation from university or any other school shall submit his/her certificate of enrollment or certificate of graduation (completion) (or certificate of prospective graduation (completion).
4. Academic transcript and certificate of completion or certificate of prospective completion of Japanese language school that provides preparatory education for entering a Japanese university
Any applicant who falls under the category of persons who have completed 12-years of schooling in a foreign country as stated in Eligibility II a. (designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology), and has completed (or is expected to complete) any designated Japanese language school that provides preparatory education for entering a Japanese university shall submit the documents.
In a country which has a unified examination or a national exam for university entrance, it is desirable to sit for the exam. If you have done so, submit the examination results and a certification of completion.

    Certificate for Students Achieving the Proficiency Level of Upper Secondary School Graduates
  • Provided by the education system of the United States
      a. SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test)
      b. ACT (American College Test)
      d. GED Test (General Educational Development Test)
  • Provided by the educational system of the United Kingdom
    GCE (General Certificate of Education)
  • Those provided by the educational system of other nations.
    A document which shows the content, nature, and results of such an examination shall be attached.
5. Grade calculation certificate of 6 subjects in the final test and qualification certificate (copy) of the international BACCALAUREAT.
Any applicant who has received the international BACCALAUREAT as stated in Eligibility II b. shall submit the documents.
6. Certificate of qualification for admission to general university (copy) of the ABITUR.
Any applicant who has received the ABITUR as stated in Eligibility II c. shall submit the documents.
7. Certificate of BACCALAUREAT (copy) and the academic transcript.
Any applicant who has received the BACCALAUREATE as stated in Eligibility II d. shall submit the documents.
8. Notification of scores (copy) and Examination Admission Card (copy) of "EJU"
If they do not arrive in time to be included with your application materials, send them promptly at a later date.
9. Notification of scores (copy) and Examination Admission Card (copy) of TOEFL or TOEIC.

10. Certificate of Registered Matters ( File Proof of Alien Registration), or a document by which your nationality and status of residence can be identified
In Principle a copy of your Certificate of Registered Matters (File Proof of Alien Registration), or a document by which your nationality and status of residence can be identified (e.g. a copy of passport, or the certificate issued by a diplomatic office in Japan, which shall be prepared in Japanese or English; attach a translation in case of any other language).
11. Official examination fee: 17,000 yen.
Draw a 17,000 yen exchange bill payable at a post office. Make no entry in the margin of beneficiary designation or any other space. Please note that the examination fee received by the University cannot be refunded under any circumstances.
12. Original receipt of payment of entrance examination fee
The original receipt of payment as prescribed by the University. Write the applicant's name.
13. Self-addressed envelope to send necessary documents for taking examination, including Examination Admission Card.
An envelope as prescribed by the University. Write the applicant's name and the address to which it should be sent to in Japan. Affix a stamp of 360 yen.
If you live in an apartment, write the number of your block and room number clearly. If you live in someone's house, write c/o (in care of ) and owner's name.
14. Two (2) self-addressed envelopes
Envelopes as prescribed by the University. Write the applicant's name, and the address to which it should be sent to in Japan. Stamps are unnecessary.
Note
  • If the title of subject, the result evaluation, or other information in any of the certificates above in (3) through (7) is shown with symbols or abbreviated, an explanation should be attached.
  • Applications which are not complete may be rejected. No change in any of the documents is permitted after submission.
  • Application documents submitted cannot be returned under any circumstances.
  • If, after admission, it is discovered that any documents have been falsified or that necessary details or documents have been omitted, admission will be cancelled.
Issuance of Examination Admission Card
Examination Admission Cards will be sent to the applicants no later than Friday, January 26, 2007.
Applicants with Special Needs
Applicants with physical or mental disabilities, who require special support in taking the entrance examination or conducting their studies, in general, should consult Nagoya University before applying for admission, as follows:
  • Period of Consultation
    Prior to Wednesday, December 20, 2006
  • Content of Consultation
    Applicants should submit the following three documents in Japanese or English (a translation should be attached for any other languages). If deemed necessary, an interview will be arranged at this University for applicants or their representatives.
    • On A4-sized paper, state the School, and department (major) you wish to apply for, and provide an account of your disability, as well as the type support requested for the purpose of the entrance examination and study, in general.
    • Medical Certificate (a copy is acceptable).
    • On A4-sized paper, a letter from a staff member of the school that you have graduated (are graduating) from, describing your daily regimen at the school, as well as the nature of support provided in assisting you with your studies.

 Cautions in Taking Examination
Be sure to bring the Examination Admission Card for "EJU" held by Association of International Education, Japan and the Examination Admission Card issued by Nagoya University, on the day of the screening test which will be held by the school of your choice. Both examination admission cards will be required for the procedures including the entrance formalities and therefore shall be retained after the examinations.
 Announcement of Results
The applicants will be notified by mail no later than Wednesday, March 7, 2007. We will not respond to any telephone inquiry concerning results

  • Any changes in tuition will be applied from the time of revision.
  • To pay the registration fee, please refer to the guidelines of enrollment procedures sent with the letter of acceptance, and pay the fee at the post office.
  • Registration fees received by the University cannot be refunded under any circumstances.

 Protection of Privacy
  • All personal information submitted to Nagoya University is appropriately managed in compliance with the ‘Act on the Protection of Personal Information Held by Independent Administrative Agencies’ and the ‘Management of Nagoya University Students’ Personal Information’.
  • Applicants’ personal information, such as name, address, date of birth, etc., will be utilised only for the purpose of selection for admission, announcement of results, and enrolment procedures.
  • Applicants’ personal information and entrance examination results will be utilised as data for analysing future selection procedures. Furthermore, the personal details of applicants admitted to Nagoya University will be utilised for i) academic affairs (student register, academic advising, etc.), ii) student welfare services (health care, career services, tuition exemption, scholarship applications, etc.), and iii) levying of tuition.
  • Nagoya University commissions external businesses to perform certain duties specified in paragraphs 2) and 3) above. In such cases, to the extent necessary for performing the duties, a part or all of the personal information may be transmitted to the contractors concerned.
