month’s rent will be necessary. In Nagoya, the average rent will range from 35,000 yen per month for a single room.
Usually a guarantor is required, and students may ask the Nagoya University International Student Support Association to act as one(*1). Also, if you are an independently financed student, you can apply for an Overseas Students Housing Deposit Loan at the International Student Center of Nagoya city (*2).
The Nagoya University International Students Support Association offers a Joint Surety Service for Residential Leases to international students enrolled in Nagoya University on the condition that students join the International Student Housing General Compensation Plan (Ryugakusei jutaku sogo Hosho) of JEES (Japan Educational Exchange and Services).
The insurance period of the International Student Housing General Compensation Plan of JEES lasts one or two years. You must be insured at all times when you have a lease of an apartment.
Because the process can take up to about four days, keep in mind that you should
apply early.
After graduation, those two surety services will be expired. Should you choose to
remain in Japan, you will need to change your guarantor. Should you become a
researcher at Nagoya University, or should your status as an exchange student change, same procedures are required. Be sure to come to the International Student Affairs Division.

(1) Refuse Disposal
A sorting system for refuse disposal is carried out in Nagoya city for environmental management. All residents are expected to separate their refuse in accordance with the system and place it in one of three types of plastic bags. Place the bags at the designated place by 8:00 a.m. on the designated day. DO NOT place them there the night before.

(2) Neighbourhood Associations (Chonai-kai)
You will be a member of a Chonai-kai and may be requested to pay a membership fee, which is usually about 300 yen per month. Chonai-kai circulate information about upcoming events on the Kairanban, which you should pass onto the next household after reading. On the community cleaning day, you are kindly requested to help clean your neighbourhood with your community members.
(3) Others
◆ To avoid disturbing your neighbors, be mindful of the noise level in your apartment at all times, especially in the early morning and late at night (after 10:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m.). In Japan, walls that separate houses and units are very thin and not soundproof.
◆ If you are away from your room for an extended period of time, such as a temporary leave from Japan, please notify your landlord. Before you depart, please arrange for someone to pay your rent, water, gas and electricity and any other expenses when they fall due.
◆ When you make a decision to rent an apartment, please inform the landlord at that point about who will be living in the premises.
◆ Getting to know your neighbours is the key to developing mutual understanding in times of trouble and in the event of natural disasters. It is advisable that you visit your neighbours to introduce yourselves when you move in, taking a piece of paper with your name written on it.
◆ Please take the necessary precautions and safety measures in your apartment to avoid fire hazards and burglary.
