a) Outline

(For more information visit the “Essential Points of Joint Surety Service for Residential Leases of the Nagoya University International Student Support Association”)

  1. People Eligible: Students of Nagoya University.
  2. Period of Joint Guarantee: In principle, while you are an international student of Nagoya University.
  3. Leased Housing: Guaranteed housing will be pre-approved residences of the university’s choosing.
  4. Limits on Joint Guarantee: Restrictions are as follows;
    1. There will be late fees assessed if payments are not made on time.
    2. When you move out, there will be a fee for returning the room to its original condition.
    3. There will be fees assessed for the disposal of leftover house wares when you go missing.
  5. Person Liable for Joint Guarantee: The guarantor for this project will be the head Bureau of the Ryugakusei Koenkai.
  6. Application: Students receiving a guarantee will be individually decided upon after reviewing their application to the Ryugakusei Koenkai.
  7. Student Obligation: Students receiving a joint guarantee must fulfill the following;
    1. Burden all debts incurred, and be accountable to the landlord.
    2. Join the “Comprehensive Renter’s Insurance for Foreign Students Studying in Japan (CRI)” of Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES).
    3. Submit a copy of the contract.
    4. If you graduate, leave the university in some other way, or cancel the agreement, please contact the Ryugakusei Koenkai as soon as possible.

b) Newly Rented Housing

1. At the International Student Exchange Division (ISED) Office, you can come by to pick up the first three forms that need to be submitted. After consultation of a real-estate agent or the landlord, and the terms of lease have been decided, you will receive your contract. At that time, you tell him/her you will receive a guarantee from the Nagoya University International Student Support Association. Prepare required documents, pay insurance fees at the post office, and submit the documents listed below to the ISED. After submission of required forms, it will generally take two days (not including weekends and holidays) to receive your Insurance Card. Submit this to your landlord or real-estate agent. After you have submitted that, inform the appropriate person in charge at your school of your change of address.

Forms to be submitted:

  1. Application form for the Joint Surely Service for Residential Lease of the Nagoya University International Student Support Association
  2. Pledge
  3. Premium payment / receipt form for JEES
  4. Contract of related Leased Housing
  5. Receipt for the insurance fee paid at the post office
  6. Student identification card

c) Process to Complete Before Ending Insurance

Please be careful when ending your insurance contract. The insurance period typically lasts one or two years. Be mindful of the insurance period and before ending your insurance, fulfill the following requests.

  1. Get insurance application papers from the International Student Exchange Division.
  2. Transfer insurance fee at the post office.

d) What do to when you move

Article 1 of section B refers to the process for Notification of Expiration/ Nullification of Joint Surety Service. Get this form from the ISED. Submit the previously stated necessary documents to the ISED. In the case that you still have time left on your lease, submit a copy of your bank passbook. Furthermore, be sure not to forget to do the following things:

  1. Contact the landlord or real-estate agency. (You must give them at least one month’s notice.)
  2. Submit a notice to the ISED that you will be moving out of a previous residence.
  3. Pay the remaining balance for light, heat, and water bills.

e) Leaving Procedure

Pick up a Form No.3 at the ISED, make a record of necessary items previously listed, and submit back to the ISED. Also, in the event that you still have time left on your lease, please submit a copy of your bank passbook in Japan to receive money back. Furthermore, please do not forget to do the following things:

  1. Contact the landlord or real-estate agency. (You must give them at least one month’s notice.)
  2. Submit a notice to the ISED that you will be moving out of a previous residence.
  3. Pay the remaining balance for light, heat, and water bills. Especially if you are returning to your home country, clarify necessary leaving procedures with the management company at your residence.

f) In Case of Graduation or Leaving Nagoya University and Change of Status of Residence from "College Student"

Follow the procedure listed in Section E.
